Thank you for your interest in the Center for Advanced Studies at Wheeler High School.

Open House

For potential applicants and their parents or guardians, the faculty and staff have planned an Open House at The Center for Advanced Studies in Science, Math and Technology at Wheeler High School in November, 2010 (date TBA) at 7:00 pm. A presentation will be held in the gym followed by tours of the facilities and laboratories. Current students will be available to answer questions about student life.

Eligibility

  • Must be an incoming freshman
  • Must be in a position to enter the program at the Accelerated Math 1 or Accelerated Math 2 level
  • Must reside in the Cobb County School District
  • Must complete and return application by the deadline
  • Must agree to the following program requirements:
    • Minimum of 28 credits (block scheduling allows for a possibility of 32 credits)
    • A minimum of four magnet approved technology courses
    • Required internship in senior year
    • Minimum of 10 magnet courses in math and science
    • Senior project with math/science related topic

Admissions Criteria

  • A local admissions committee will consider the following criteria in making admissions decisions:
  • Proper math placement entering the program
  • Middle school grades
  • Standardized test scores
  • Admissions test scores
  • Strong interest and aptitude in math and/or science
  • Strong communication skills
  • Recommendations from middle school math, science and English teachers

Admissions Testing

An admissions test will be administered on January 22, 2011 at Campbell High School. Admissions testing for all magnet programs will be conducted at Campbell High School. Information will be sent with directions, inclement weather procedures, and make-up dates. If there are any special services needed for testing, please call Dr. Judy Romanchuk at Campbell.

The admissions test is a version of the PSAT. We do NOT expect you to study or prepare in any way for the test, but if you feel you must study, you can use any PSAT Review materials available on the internet or at local bookstores.

Important Dates

November, 2010 (TBA) -7:00 – 9:00pm Information Meeting/Open House begins in the gymnasium

December 3, 2010- Application Deadline (Applications must be postmarked by this date)

December 3, 2010 – Educator Recommendation Forms due back to Wheeler High School

January 22, 2011- Admissions Testing at Campbell High School

TBD – Alternate Testing
An alternate testing day is provided for those students with religious conflicts and other extenuating circumstances. Please contact Dr. Stark for more information at tiffany.stark@cobbk12.org.

February 24, 2011 – Admissions Notification Letters mailed to Students

March 16, 2011 – Wheeler Magnet Open House for Accepted Students

March 18, 2011 – Postmark Deadline for Accepted Students’ Letter of Intent

March 29 and 31, 2011 – New Student Advisement & Registration
