Admissions

Thank you for your interest in the Center for Advanced Studies at Wheeler High School.

Open House

For potential applicants and their parents or guardians, the faculty and staff have planned an Open House at The Center for Advanced Studies in Science, Math and Technology at Wheeler High School in November. A presentation will be held in the auditorium followed by tours of the facilities and laboratories. Current students will be available to answer questions about student life.

Eligibility

  • Must be an incoming freshman
  • Must be in a position to enter the program at the Advanced Math 1 or Advanced Math 2 level. Students who have not completed Enriched Math or Advanced Math 1 in middle school may apply but if accepted would be required to take both Enriched Math and Advanced Math 1 prior to or during their freshman year.
  • Must reside in the Cobb County School District
  • Must complete and return application by the deadline
  • Must agree to the following program requirements:
    • Minimum of 28 credits (block scheduling allows for a possibility of 32 credits)
    • A minimum of four magnet approved technology courses
    • Required internship in senior year
    • Minimum of 10 magnet courses in math and science
    • Senior project with math/science related topic

Admissions Criteria

  • A local admissions committee will consider the following criteria in making admissions decisions:
  • Proper math placement entering the program
  • Middle school grades
  • Standardized test scores
  • Admissions test scores
  • Strong interest and aptitude in math and/or science
  • Strong communication skills
  • Recommendations from middle school math & science teachers and a third educator of the student’s choice

Admissions Testing

An admissions test will be administered in January. Admissions testing for all magnet programs will be conducted at Wheeler. Information will be sent with directions, inclement weather procedures, and make-up dates. If there are any special services needed for testing, please call Mary McGinnis at 770-578-3286.

The admissions test is a version of the PSAT. We do NOT expect you to study or prepare in any way for the test, but if you feel you must study, you can use any PSAT Review materials available on the internet or at local bookstores.

Highlights

  • A large number of Wheeler Magnet students are involved in the Fine Arts. Band, Orchestra, Chorus, Art and Drama play an important role in their lives. Not only do they make time for these activities, but many of our students have been selected for The Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra and The Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra.
  • Parents and community leaders created a nonprofit foundation, The Center for Advanced Studies Foundation, in 2003 to develop financial and volunteer resources to support the needs of The Center for Advanced Studies. A few of the many programs that the Foundation has made possible are; print and electronic newsletters, lunch & learn forums, team building activities, speakers bureau and Magnet student directories.
