Welcome to
the Center for Advanced Studies
The
Center is a specialized magnet program offering
Cobb County high school students a unique and
advanced curriculum in science, math, and technology.
The Center for Advanced Studies opened in the
fall of 2000 in a new 33,000 square foot facility
designed especially for the program and located
on the campus of Wheeler High School in Marietta,
Georgia. Instruction
in the Center is provided by a dedicated faculty
of content specialists and supplemented by the
latest state-of-the-art technology and resources.
In addition, most magnet teachers have or are
working towards the gifted teacher certification
offered by the state of Georgia and many hold
advanced degrees.
The
Center attracts high achieving students from the
Cobb County School District who are interested
in science, math and technology. Interested students
apply to the program during the fall of their
eighth grade year and go through a competitive
admissions process which includes standardized
tests, teacher recommendations and evaluation
of past school performance. There is great community
interest in the magnet program from middle school
students and parents as the advanced curriculum
is not available in other public or private schools
in the area. In addition to advanced classes,
the Center makes use of the latest instructional
technology and has developed partnerships with
Georgia Tech and other nearby universities in
an effort to keep students & teachers current
with developing technologies. The program offers
a wide array of Advanced Placement classes and
post AP classes as well as an off-campus in-depth
scientific research internship program for seniors.
Recent
graduates are attending top schools including MIT,
Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Duke and the honors programs
at UGA and Georgia Tech.
